THE HERINGER FAMILY

John Heringa, later changed to Heringer, was born 16 March 1819, in the province of Groningén, Holland, his parents being Peter and Geertje Heringa. The later died when John was seven years old and the former died two years later, in 1829. In the family which survived they were two children, one son and a daughterghter. They both lived with their grandmother, but when John was twelve years of age he was bound out to farm work for six months in the adjoining county of Birum, at the expiration of which time he went to live with an uncle in Appingedam, who kept a dry-goods store and manufactured woolen goods. John remained with him nine years and learned the weaving trade, at which he Worked part of the time and the rest of the time at farming following nine years he served in the army, then in 185 he was engaged on the police.-force in the own of Oppenhuezen. While there he met Geerte Joustra, a native of Oppénhuezen, in Friesland, born 29 Jan 1835, whom he Married in 1857. On 19 July 1868, having saved $1,100, they started for America, sailing from Liverpool and landing in Boston., thence to New York, where they arrived after a voyage of fourteen days.

After stopping New York three days they took a steamer for Panama, thence to San Francisco, landing 14 Sept 1868. The next day they came to Sacramento, where a friend and a countryman, sold them a small ranch of thirty acres, located in the Merritt District, Yolo County, for $600. They next invested $300 in cows and started in the dairy business. They lived there three years then sold the place for $1000 and bought 160 acres, devoted to general farming, in Sacramento County, located near what is now Mather Field Air Base. Mr. Heringa died 31 Jan 1902; Mrs. Heringa died 3 Mar 1898, both are buried in Bell View Cemetery, Sacramento County. All children, except Charles, born in Oppenhuezen, Friesland, Holland.

2+ Peter Frederick Heringer, born in Oppenhuezen Holland, came to California with 1IL3 parents in 1868. He married Ella D. Brindupkey, born 22 Dec 1871, at Shingle Springs, California, daughter of F. W. and Anita (Bentley) Brindupkey. She died 18 Aug 1932, in Sacramento.
Peter Heringer was an engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s. After 1eaLng be railroad he was Commissary Officer at San Quentin Prison, California, until 1899 he then went into the hotel business in Rio Vista for ten years, after which he invested in a freighting business on the Sacramento River, operating his tugs and 1arge mainly between Sacramento and San Francisco. He continued n this business until lie retired He was a member of Sacramento Lodge L0.O.F., and a Life member of Vallejo Lodge No. 559, B.P.O.E.

7+ Howard, b 6 Feb l893San Quentin, California, d 9 June 1954, Lois Totman, b 17 Dec 1900 Rio Vista,  California, dan of Charles and Minnie (McCarty) Totman. After gramar school Howard worked in the bank at Rio Vista for several years. After leaving the bank he went into the dredging business in the Delta, making his headquarters in Rio Vista. Howard was Chief of the Rio Vista Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years. He also a Life Member of the Elk’s Lodge. His widow, Mrs. Lois Heringer married 3 Oct 1959, Luke Hufhines, an employee of the Dow Chemical Company.

Norma E., b 17 Dec 1924; m 9 Feb 1947, Robert A. Dal Porto, born 26 Mar 1925, Stockton, Calif., son of Anthony and Edith (Berta) Del Porto. Norma graduated from the Rio Vista Schools and the University of California at Berkeley. (Delta Delta Delta). She was President of her P.T.A., 1961-62. Robert graduated from the Oakley Grammar, Liberty Union High School and the University of California at Berkeley. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, Golden Bear II B II Winged Helmet, Cal Club; Rep. at Large, Big C. Football; and Engineering Tou Bet Pi, Honor Society. He entered the military service, in July 1943 and was a 1st Lt. U.S. Marines Air Corps - Training Command, Corpus Chriati, Texas. Pilot Instructor. He was discharged in May 1946 and is now a cattle rancher at Oakley, Calif. Robert has been a member of the school board of Trustees for 13 years; Chairman of the County Conmiittee, ASC, 6 years and a Past President of the Lions Club.

8+ Lawrence (Larry) William Heringer, b 8 Mar 1898, San Quentin, California; m 10 June 1923, at Lakeport, Calif., Winifred Pearl Tyack, b 26 Dec 1900, Gem, Idaho, daughter of Edward T. and Mary L. (Tregembo) Tyack. Lary graduated from the Rio Vista Graxmiar School, Sacramento High School and the University of Californie at Berkeley, (1920). After graduating from college he chose to enter the Insurance Business and opened his own office in Sacramento and is operating today under the name of Heringer Insurance Service. Larry is a member of and held offices in the following lodges:

3+Joseph Heringer, born 6 Oct 1861, Oppenhuezen, Holland, came to California with his parents in 1868. He married 29 Aug 1885, Martha Tromp) born 5 Mar 1866, Nyeta, Holland, who came to California about 1882. Mr. Heringer farmed cloae to the area a occupied by Mather Field, Sacramento County. In 1901 he moved his family to Clarkaburg, Yolo County and farmed in Marritt Island Reclamation Distict until 1906, wben he bought a farm in the Lisbon Reclamation District, four miles north of Clarksburg, on the Sacramento River, and made this the family home. Mr. Heringer and his sons, John and Stephen had a dairy and farmed the land to hay, grain, alfalfa and some row crops. All children of Joseph and Martha Heringer were born in Sacramento County, Califórnia.

+ John Franklin, born 22 Sept 1886; married 1 Nov 1916, Alta Genette Smith (13) daughter of lIilhiam H. and Anna (Gould) Smith. John graduated from the Highland grammar school in Sacramento County and moved with his family to the Clarksburg area. in 1901. After the death of his father in 1912 John and his brother Stephen took over the operation of the home ranch in the Lisborn Reclamation District..
In 1916 John and his brother helped reclaim the tule land for the Netherland Land Co. in Reclamation District 999, which had just been leveed off from the flood waters of the Sacramento River, this area was also known later as the Holland Land District. John and his brother Stephen, operated their farming interests together, as Heringer Brothers for many years. They acquired and farned a large acreage both in Sacramento and Yolo Counties.
After Heringer Brothers retired from active farming the children of both families formed a partnership and not only took over the farming operations of Heringer Brothers, but acquired more farming land in Yolo County, known as Holly Ranch, and a large ranch in Butte County on the Feather river. John Heringer is a member of Sacramento Lodge No. 6, B.P.0.E
Alt. (Smith) Heringer, was born. 1 Nov 1888 in New Monterey, Calif. She graduated from the Pacific Grove grammar and High Schools and the San Jose State Normal . She taught school In the Pacific District, Sacramento, County (1913-1916). All chi1dren born in Clarksburg, Calif.
Lewiston, Idaho, daughter of William W. and Blanche (Shaw) Alexander; George graduated from the Clarksburg Grammar and High Schools; and the University of California at Davis. (Calpha). He entered U.S. Military Service 3C’ Feb 1943; 10months H.P.; 3 months A.S.T.P.; 21 months Signal Corps, SISgt. 835 & 3198 Signal Service Bu. Served 2 years in China, Burma and India. Discharged 16 Dec 1945. He is associated with Heringer Farming operations, in Yolo, Sacramento and Butte Counties. Barbara graduated from Ravenna Graimnar School, Seattle, Washington, McClatchy High School and Sacramento Jr. College at Sacramento; and the University of California at Davis. (Alpha Sigma).

Discharged Nov 1952, as a Cpl. Ned is a teacher in the Courtland Schools, Sacramento County and is a member, but not actively engaged in the Heringer Farming operations.

10. Gertrude Anne, b 21 Oct 1887; m 2 Oct 1910, Boyd Alexander Taylor, b 25 June 1885, El Dorado County, California, son of William and Ann(Beckman)Taylor. Boyd Taylor was a civil engineer, a profession he followed for several years with the Western Pacific Railroad, when they were constructing their railroad through the Feather River Canyon. Re bought a farm in the Lisbon Reclamation District and made that his home until he sold the farm in the middle 1950’s and moved to Redding, where he died 27 Aug 1957. In addition to farming in the Lisbon District he drove the Clarksburg School Bus and was a trustee of the Lisbon Reclamation District No. 307.

11. Stephen Frederick, 6 16 Mar 1889; in 2 Oct1912, Mabel Gladys Holmes (26) 6 17 Apr 1889, Sacramento County, Calif., den of Joseph and Carrie (Rich) Holmes. Stephen graduated from the Clarksburg Gr,,”ar School and went to farming with his father and brother on the home ranch. About 1916 he helped plow up the tules and bring under cultivation the newly reclaimed land of Reclamation District No. 999. He and his brother John bought and farmed a large acreage of this choice land under the partnership of Heringer Bros. Later they added to their holdings, farming land in the Pierson Reclamation District No. 551 in Sacramento County, of which district Stephen is a trustee. After Heringer Brothers retired from active farming, the children of both families through legal agreements, formed a partnership and not only took over the farming operations of Heringer Brothers, but acquired more farming land in Yolo County, known as the Holly Ranch, and a large ranch in Butte County on the Feather River.

Stephen Heringer is a member and Past Master of Franklin Lodge No. 143, P. & A.M., Courtland; Scottish Rice and Ben Ali Temple in Sacramento. Also a member of Sacramento Lodge No. 6, B.P.OE. Mabel (Holmes) Heringer, graduated from the Pacific District Grammar school and Sacramento High School; taught school in the Richiand District at Hood, California and Bret Harte Sacramento. She was a trustee of the Clarksburg Union School District for 25 years. A member of the Clarkaburg Community Church, Onisbo Chapter No. 161 O.E.S.; Tuesday Club; Soroptimist Club; Sacramento; Past Queen, Menzaleh temple No. 16, daughterghters of Nile and 2nd. Fred has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, Clarksburg Schools; Past President California Tomato Growers Assoc.; held all offices in the local Paris Bureau; and has taken a very active part in the California Farm Bureau Federation, holds the office of a Chairman of the organizations’s Labor Committee and holds the office of Vice-President of that organization.

12. Martha Josephine, b 18 Nov 1892; in 19 Oct 1919, Frederick Clair Klxtland, born 13 Mar 1892, Preeport, Sacramento County, son of Frederick N. and Nellie (Bayles) Kirtland. lit. Kirtland Sr. was a blacksmith in Freeport before becoming a farmer in the Lisbon District, Yolo County, before 1900. After graduating from school Clair Kirtland went to farming with his father. They raised hops for many years and then alfalfa and row crops. After his father retired Clair took over the operation of the ranch and when Clair retired his sons took over the operation of the ranch. Their children were born in Clarksburg, Yolo County.

4+ John Heringer was born 12 June 1863, Oppenhuezen, Holland; died 30 Aug 1906, Clarksburg, ‘fob County; married 7 Oct 1887, Charlotte Pylman, born 25 Sept 1868, Holland; died 31 Oct% 1943, C1arksburg John Reringer farmed in Sacramento County, near what is now Mather Field Air Base, until about 1895, when he purchased a farm in Merritt Island, near Clarksburg, Yolo County, and made that his home. Mr. Heringer’s sister, Mrs. Hiram Bish, died at the birth of her son Raymond, and Mr and Mrs. Heringer having no children of their own, adopted Raymond Bish.

Raymond was a farmer in the Merritt Island Reclamation District and served as president of the Board of Trustees of the District for 25 years. lie was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Courtland High School District and the Bates Elementary District for 17 years, and he was a Past President of the Courtland Parlors, Native Sons of the Golden West. Re was very active as a wireless and radio operator for 35 years and was a member of the Sacramento Radio Club and the Mars Net Radio Club at McClellan Air Force Base.
